I have wanted to learn how to crochet for a long time. My mother in law has shown me the chain stitch several times. I would start working on my dish cloth and then I would put it down for several weeks and then when I went to pick it up again, I wouldn’t remember some detail and I would wait until I saw her next, and once again she’d show me all over how to do it. This pattern would repeat and repeat.
I decided to look on-line and found a free crochet course. The first step was once again the chain stitch. The instructor did not want you to move on until your stitches were uniform. I did not have uniform stitches I would for a while and then I’d have a stitch or two that were tighter than the rest and on and on it went. When I found some time here and there I’d give it a try but for the most part my yarn sat collecting dust. Until…
My cousin, her husband, and two girls came for a visit. Once the children were all in bed for the night Kristin took out her wool and started knitting. We talked about knitting and crocheting and how talented our Grandmother was at both. I lamented about my attempts to crochet and my cousin said to go grab what I had.
In a few minutes she had taught me the Half Double stitch and I was having a hoot with it. I made myself pick it up each night so I wouldn’t forget. Hannah’s birthday was just a week away and I thought I can make a pillow and blanket for her doll.
I had so much fun sneaking into my room at night to work on her baby’s blanket. She walked in one morning and saw the yarn and asked me what I was going to make. I told her not to ask questions when it is almost your birthday.
Her birthday came and the blanket was finished but the pillow was only about 1/2 done. I gave her the blanket and promised her the pillow would be done shortly. Baby Esther is currently enjoying her pillow and blanket and Hannah has had fun tucking her in.
I am already looking forward to my next project. I have watched a few YouTube videos and am anxious to get crocheting!
Do you knit or crochet? Any projects in the works?

pretty!
That is adorable! I used to crochet in grade school, but not since. I soooo want t get back into it. Especially now that I've seen that!
I am new to it but I find it relaxing.
You did such a beautiful job! I have never tried knitting or crocheting but I am envious of people who do. It looks like it takes alot of time and skill!
My recent post Big Event! BBQ Giveaway (Ends 7/30)
Thanks Carrie, I am still just learning but having a lot of fun with it.
My grandmother tried to teach me years back…I enjoy a great blanket, but just cannot make one for the life of me. I'm more into photography and scrapbooking. BUT Esther looks thrilled with her new blankie and pillow–GOOD JOB!!!
Thanks Pamela, Hannah’s baby Esther is loving it. Funny how all our grandmas knew how to crochet or knit, and so few ladies do today. I guess we are busy with other pursuits. I like learning these skills from the past. Oh and I am pathetically behind on scrapbooking.
I used to love to crochet with my grandmother. She also taught my oldest son to make squares when he was young. I haven't done it for years though… Your work is good, and it takes me back! Very nice.
Thanks, I am just learning but enjoying it!
I love the blanket and pillow for your daughters doll! I also love that you gave something that challenged you a second try. I have been wanting to pick up knitting but it scares the heck out of me. You have given me the courage to try again! Thanks!
i love this post! maybe it's because crocheting has eluded me too. i learned to knit, which i have heard is actually more difficult, but crocheting? i just can't get it and i so want to make some wash clothes because i love the ones that are 100% (i didn't like them for along time because i'd only ever gotten synthetic fiber ones. but oh, the cotton ones are the best washcloths in the world!) i only have one because i refuse to buy them when i "know" i could learn . . . this has totally inspired me to try – try again! thanks!! your blanket and pillow looks fabulous (and totally uniform ; )
I don't knit, but used to crochet a long time ago. I've forgotten how now. I do design and sew for our Etsy shop though:)
