I have wanted to learn how to crochet for a long time. My mother in law has shown me the chain stitch several times. I would start working on my dish cloth and then I would put it down for several weeks and then when I went to pick it up again, I wouldn’t remember some detail and I would wait until I saw her next, and once again she’d show me all over how to do it. This pattern would repeat and repeat.
I decided to look on-line and found a free crochet course. The first step was once again the chain stitch. The instructor did not want you to move on until your stitches were uniform. I did not have uniform stitches I would for a while and then I’d have a stitch or two that were tighter than the rest and on and on it went. When I found some time here and there I’d give it a try but for the most part my yarn sat collecting dust. Until…
My cousin, her husband, and two girls came for a visit. Once the children were all in bed for the night Kristin took out her wool and started knitting. We talked about knitting and crocheting and how talented our Grandmother was at both. I lamented about my attempts to crochet and my cousin said to go grab what I had.
In a few minutes she had taught me the Half Double stitch and I was having a hoot with it. I made myself pick it up each night so I wouldn’t forget. Hannah’s birthday was just a week away and I thought I can make a pillow and blanket for her doll.
I had so much fun sneaking into my room at night to work on her baby’s blanket. She walked in one morning and saw the yarn and asked me what I was going to make. I told her not to ask questions when it is almost your birthday.
Her birthday came and the blanket was finished but the pillow was only about 1/2 done. I gave her the blanket and promised her the pillow would be done shortly. Baby Esther is currently enjoying her pillow and blanket and Hannah has had fun tucking her in.
I am already looking forward to my next project. I have watched a few YouTube videos and am anxious to get crocheting!
